Burgh, there is no such thing as a superior defense when it comes to 3-4 vs 4-3.
Both have their merits, and the successful application of either is entirely dependent upon personnel.
And it also depends upon the type of offense you are playing against.
As more teams take the ball vertical the 3-4 is slowly becoming the defense of choice due to the clutter it creates over the middle and the flexibility it allows for a pass rush. So if that is what you mean by "better" than I would agree.
Oh, you're right, you offered much more insight into the question of which defense is better by saying "they're both equally as good"...and your insight into the fact that teams are throwing the ball was especially educational.

It depends on the team your playing, which one is best. If your playing a west coast passing attack...I agree, with the right personel a 3-4 is better. On the other hand....give me a good blocking TE...a bruising FB and a big RB?...then I will take a 4-3 all day.
Football is cyclic....Offenses play the West coast passing offense you will see most teams playing the 3-4....but, when most teams start playing 3-4, you will see most O-cordinators start to pull gaurds and using FBs and TEs as blockers..lack of big men inside starts to tell late in the third qtr, then the play action starts to work..then you will see the comeback of the 4-3..
