Individual TDs are overrated

I decided to revive abother one of my all-time favorite post.

first off i am not saying TDs are not importent. I am just saying it really doesn't matter who scores the TD.

One of the best examples is Peyton Manning. in 2004 Manning broke the TD record with 49 TDs. Manning this year had 28 TDs. Now we can assume that Peyton didn't suddenly suffer from a loss of talent. So why did this happen?

Alot of factors contributed to this. One is that year the Colts only ran in 10 TDs in 2004. This year the colts ran for 18 TDs. Also that year alot of the TDs the Colts thrwe can in goal-line situations where most of the running TDs usually come from.

so what would have happened if that year the Colts run in more TDs at the goal-line? Well simply put Manning would not have broken the TD record.

The thing some fans don't understand is this would not have made him a worse player cause TDs are the easiest stat to minpulate (all of Peytons other years he didn't score more then 33 TDs).

a main reason some guys get more TDs then others in that they simply run that kind of system. Brett Favre won 3 straight MVPs but in none of those years did the Packers run for more then 10 TDs. You see often the case is when you score a TD in one part of the game you take it away from somewhere else.

SA is a good example for RBs. he is often in the top 10 in the NFL in TDs... this is because in the 4 years he has been with Seattle only 8 rushing TDs have not been scored by him. no other RB in the NFL gets feed the ball as much in the goal-line as SA (who this year scored 27/29 rushing TDs and one was by Hasselbeck)

Look at Holmes of KC and consider this possibilty. if KC ran their team the year he scored 27 TDs he could have got 30 (they ran for 32 TDs that year) and then we would be talking about how he hold the record.

now let me bring up some examples which sometimes occur which effect TDs.

which RB did better?

A) a RB running 15 times on a drive for 65 yards and a QB throwing for the other 15 and a TD.
or
B) a RB is brought in for 1 play at the end of a long drive and runs for a TD (kinda like we saw Bettis do for a while when he had more TDs then yards).

also

A) a DB picks off a pass and goes down at the 2 yard line and a QB passes in a TD in 2 attempts.
or
B) a QB throws for 55 yards in 6 attempts and then a RB who got 25 yards finished the drive off (kinda like we see Trent Green do).

some QBs get to pump up their stats cause they are in a running system but which passes for TDs (Big Ben is a good example) yet a QB like Aikman who hands it off to Smith looks worse on a stat sheet)

and now let me leave you with 1 final thought.

Mike Vrabel.

In the case of a "Larry Johnson" it matters. That 1 guy makes all the difference when getting the ball into the hole. We can all assume this will also be true of Reggie Bush.

As far as a team like The Patriots or Colts go.... no, it really makes no difference. The ball is going in the rest is just the coach's particular style that play.

Well Trent Green is no rookie and im sure if the team was so inclined they could have feed him 30-35 TDs every year these past 4 years and this coming year as well...
