Eagles | Bunkley arrested during the past week?
Thu, 27 Jul 2006 23:48:23 -0700

ComcastSportsNet.com reports, citing Profootballtalk.com, Philadelphia Eagles first-round draft pick DT Brodrick Bunkley was arrested in the past week for having a loaded handgun on the dashboard of his car. The report claims that efforts to have the charges dropped quietly were denied by prosecutors.

Schmidt's right. WIP's midday update guy, Steve Trevalese is reporting that it wasn't Bunkley, but Jabbar Gaffney, who was stopped for weaving in and out of traffic on the Walt Whitman bridge. According to Trevalese, when the fuzz stopped Gaffney, they found a loaded gun in his possession. This was back in June.

Eagles GM Tom Heckert is on the air right now, disavowing any involvement by Bunkley.

Eagles WR Gaffney charged with unlawful possession of a handgun
RANDY PENNELL
Associated Press

PHILADELPHIA - Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Jabar Gaffney was charged with unlawful possession of a handgun following a traffic stop - an arrest that occurred last month in New Jersey, but wasn't announced until Friday.

Gaffney had a permit to carry the weapon in Texas, but not New Jersey, Camden County prosecutors said Friday. The charge carries a maximum five-year sentence, but most first-time offenders get no jail time.

Gaffney, 25, was stopped on June 20 by police for driving erratically on the Walt Whitman Bridge, which connects Philadelphia and New Jersey. As Gaffney was reaching into the glove compartment, the officer saw the handgun, a loaded .380 semiautomatic that was registered to another person riding in the car.

Gaffney showed the officer his concealed-weapon license, but was charged and released on his own recognizance.

Prosecutors said Gaffney intends to apply for a program for first-time offenders that result in charges being dismissed upon completion of the program. Gaffney's attorney, Robert A. Greenberg, did not immediately return a message left Friday morning.

Eagles coach Andy Reid said the charges were the result of a misunderstanding.

"He had the gun registered in the state of Texas, he thought it was fine on his move up here," Reid said. "Jabar is not the kind of guy I'm too worried about. He's a pretty straight shooter. ... No pun intended there."

Gaffney signed as a free agent with the Eagles in the offseason following four seasons with the Houston Texans. Originally a second-round draft pick out of Florida in 2002, Gaffney has 171 career catches for 2,009 yards and seven touchdowns. He signed a one-year deal with the Eagles in March.

I'm surprised that PFT didn't immediately start to disparage Bunkley's character and make fun of him by calling him a "turd" before they knew any of the facts.  PFT is always complaining about not getting credit for breaking stories.  But out of the other side of their mouth want to make the distinction that they're not "real journalists", or "the real press".  Well this incident illustrates why you truly aren't "REAL journalists".  It also shows why you don't deserve to get any credit for breaking stories.

The reason you want to claim that you're not real journalists is so you're not held accountable for what you report.  You report news on football, football players, etc. The fact is you are journalists, you're just not very good ones.

I come here because I'm a football junkie. I go to a lot of websites for info on the NFL. I don't like the know-it-all/smart ass tone of the writers on this site. But if that's the angle they want to take, I think it's only fair that they get a dose of their own medicine when they mess up.

They're very critical of others making mistakes (e.g. Len "Pastabelly" and many others). They have certain reporters, players and agents that they have it in for, and make every effort to rip on them whenever there's a chance. So I'll rip on them if I think they're wrong. Hopefully in a smart-ass tone.

Their analysis of players and teams is really weak.

Who you rip in your own house (or site) is your business but when you go to someone elses house (or site) and use that as a platform to rip them it is a serious indictment of your character.

Jetblackninja,

Wow! A "serious indictment of your character"?  Are you kidding me? First of all, I don't have a website, and most people don't have their own website, so that isn't an option.  Secondly, I think you're a little quick to judge my character. Thirdly, you're a moran.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but there are only three rules listed when you come into this message board. Do you know what they are Jet?

1. Don't swear (opps, you said "poop". Maybe you should get your own website so you can swear

2. Don't be a racist.

3. Rip TacoBill as much as you like.

Since he took responsibility for the Bunkley mistake, I'm within the rules right?  Last I checked this isn't a communist state.  Anyway, the guys on this site seem like pretty tough characters and can deal with a little criticism.

And I never said that I dislike everything they do.  Actually, I like a lot of stuff they do.  The tone they take rubs me wrong sometimes that's all. And I wish they'd stop saying they're not "the real press".  Other than that, I like it.  I even like chatting with people that love football like you. And I'm already sorry I called you a moran.  My character is just fine thank you, I just like to mix it up a little.  Which I believe is one of the things you should do on a site like this one.
