Best Backup QB?

In a previous thread, Griese and Shaub (Atl) were mentioned. I immediately thought of Garcia.

it seems like there's a dearth of quality QB's in the NFL.

any others?

schaub, dilfer, volek, and my bold, outlandish pick-unproven-soon-to-be2nd-string Tarvaris Jackson. mike mcmahon won't make the squad. the mpls beat writer said deceny laws kept him from accuartley describing him during camp. ouch.

but what about: boller, frerrotteeeee, ramsay, and even weinke? not total slouches. i'd take anyone of them over mike mcmahon, anyday!

Mike McMahon is one of the most ripped QBs in the league, but I agree, he is trash.

Given the opportunity, I think Shaub could really shine.

Garcia is used up. Way to many hard shots to the noggin.

Volek is pretty good.

I don't know why Jacksonville doesn't just start Garrard. It seems like he plays more than Fat Albert. They might be better off.

How old is Weinke now, 40? 50? Dissapointment....thats all I have to say.

Matt Cassell is one of the most underrated QBs in the league. I would trade for him. Seems like a good kid and will be a good QB.

I'm not a Patrick Ramsay fan at all. I think he's more of the emergency 3rd.

Boller's problem is that he was thrust into the lineup. I don't think he was ready. He needs to take a step back and learn. Learning from McNair will be a very good thing.

Definitely not the best, but one of the more intriguing would have to be Jason Campbell.  I can't wait to see what this guy's got to offer.

What about Gus Frerotte or Ryan Fitzpatrick- Both have fared well in backup roles.

What about Adrian McPherson on the Saints. Lots of potential there as well.

I like Matt Cassell too, but what good is he to me? If he is playing that means Brady went down and our season is shot. Maybe good trade bait?

Well...that's the thing about this thread:

I was hesitant to start it, actually, because noone REALLY wants to find out how good their backup QB is. Right?

I was pretty impressed by Garcia last night, playing with the second team. He looked poised, and fleet when the pocket got flushed. It got me to thinking about which team would be best off if their main guy went down.

Alot of nice names have been brought up (Garrard played well when Leftwich went down, Shaub played well in Vick's absence). But I'm pretty happy with Garcia.

Gravedigger, I know he's been banged up (broken leg, right?), but I was unaware of a concussion history. Are you sure about that?

I'm not 100%, but I thought he did have some problems in San Fran with concussions.

Either that or TO made his head hurt calling him gay and such.

he has a looong way to go to be a stable quarterback.  i see him in the mold of marcus/michael vick, really.

That is why I used the word "potential" instead of "ability". Like both Vicks he is a way off from being ready to start 16 games, and he may NEVER be a starter, but he has the POTENTIAL to one day be a great back-up at the least.

Besides the fact that Leftwich is a better QB, I don't know why they don't just start Garrard either.

Sean Payton (coach) doesn't think his potential lies in the QB position either, because Mcpherson will be returning kicks in the Titans game tomorrow.

I realize Fat Albert is the better QB. I said it seems like Garrard is always filling in. Fat Albert is  coming up with a different injury all the time. It was a joke.

who the hell said dilfer? he stinks. Id take David Garrard over any backup in the league, and even some starters.

In a way he did. But it was really the Ravens D that won that Super Bowl, remember!
