The OT coin flip rule sucks. I have been hoping over the last 2 years that the NFL would find a better way to deal with OT. High school football (at least here in KC) has it right. Put 5 minutes on the clock and each team will have a chance to score. Unfotunetely, that is how my high school football team (Blue Spring South) lost to Ladell Betts and Brandon Lloyd's high school team (Blue Springs) in OT, but I still think that's a better way to deal with it. Maybe not exactly in that fashion, but let both teams have a chance. Anyone with me on this?

Nah. I guess I'm just old school. More often than not, the best team still wins in the NFL. Although I'd have no issue with a few other options...
1. Give first possession to the way team. The home team has the crowd.
2. Give the first possession whoever won the original toss.
I guess I'm a believer in the "if you can't win it in 60 min, then you deserve what happens in OT" school of thought.
It would be great for gambling if they were to switch to the college style of OT.
Losing by the hook or more in ot fukn blows.
Though I did win a game last year on a LT break away run vs the redskins....had a little under a dime on san diego and chalked it up for a loss until brees blew up in the fourth qt to tie it
I think the pro game should adopt a twist on the college style of OT. Instead of starting on the 20 yard line each time, increase the yardage a team needs to go to score after each additional quarter. Start them out on the 35 and keep backing them up 10 yards till they're starting under the shadows of their goal post. Sure would be exciting to watch.

or could be very painful to watch. I like Taco's recommendation that NO FG's in OT! It's one thing to driveto the 30 and kick it. It's another to get into the end zone.

Hey Taco, just watched Inside the NFL (only because profootballtalk.com doesn't have its own TV show yet) and Bob Costas said just about the exact same thing that you said..."can't win on a field goal."
For a league that sooo precise, to use a coin flip for OT kinda sucks.
how about no sudden death? after one team scores to take the lead, their special teams have to kick the ball to the other team, and then their defense has to go out there and stop them.
any team with the lead HAS to stop the other team with their d. before they can claim the win.
THAT's a simple change, and it would be exciting...
I love the OT coin flip......if it's still around, there's potential for another Marty Mornenwig type incident..........I'll never forget Smarty Marty winning the coin toss in OT and elected to give the ball to the other team first........they lost.

I'm with ya on the no FG's...but you gotta keep "sudden death"! The name alone is just too damn cool!
