The best Deep Passer in the game

First off we must establish what a deep pass is... for me a deep pass means a bomb down the field (40 yards or more). So if we use this as a measuring stick to try to decide who are the best deep passers in the game today we should also consider that the ball should actually travel 40 yards past the line of scrimmage in the air and not be a 10 yard pass which a WR breaks... this will in some ways help to level the measuring field for Qbs who have better or worse cast.

Also I am trying to find out who the best deep passers in the game today are... so I will overlook early years in some cases when a QB didn't have arm strength so the player he was doesn't take away from what that player can do today.

Also I really don’t consider yards much of an importance in this… it is more can you make a completed pass or not.

I looked up these stats you can use the ESPN splits and checked QBs I felt were important to the category and most of the others not list did bad enough that I did not feel a need to mention them.

All passes over 40 yards

Big Ben 5/11 45% 2 TDs 2 Ints
Palmer 8/22 36% 4 TDs 1 Int
Brady 12/34 35% 6 TDs 4 Ints (from 2003 on)
Bledsoe 25/84 30% 6 TDs 10 Int (from 1996 on)
Culpeper 24/86 29% 16 TDs 12 Ints
McNabb 13/45 29% 3 TDs 3 Ints (from 2001 on)
P. Manning 11/44 25% 5 TDs 3 Ints
Brunell 25/101 25% 6 TDs 4 Ints
Green 10/41 24% 1 TDs 3 Ints (from 2000 on)
Collins 13/56 23% 7 TDs 5 Ints (from 2001 on)
Leftwich 5/21 23% 3 TDs 2 Ints
Brees 3/13 23% 1 TDs 2 Ints
Delhomme 6/33 18% 1 TDs 0 Ints
Hasselbeck 3/18 17% 1 TDs 0 Ints
Bulger 4/23 17% 1 TDs 4 Ints

Now that we Have our Stats we will look at other factors such as passing systems, offensive talent around the player, toughness of the division defenses these players face and just my opinion from what I have seen and this the conclusion I came up with.

#1 Brady (He is in the AFC east which is traditionally the toughest defensive division in football and along with that he never had a top target to throw to or a running game to take pressure off him except for 1 year)
#2 Palmer (He has a great cast but usually has to play some pretty good defenses and his second year starting was better then his first)
#3 Big Ben (I put the person with the best stats #3 for a number of reasons… the system he plays in which is running 60% of the time helps out the passing game especially the deep passing game. He has had very good talent around him (Ward 2 years and Burress one and frankly I can’t put him higher then this with only 11 attempted passes... it would be unfair to the other guys who have proven more)
#4 McNabb (I am torn on who I should put first between McNabb and Bledsoe but in the end I decided McNabb’s usually very average cast was enough to give him the edge).
#5 Bledsoe (He usually has good weapons around him but not people who light it up like Chad Johnson or Owens… well until now I mean. He also for a large part of his career played in the AFC East and he been doing well in the NFC East).
#6 Culpeper (He has played with great talent around him, especially Moss, and often in one of the weakest defensive divisions but he does get great results so I put him here).
#7 Brunell (He has just about the same stats as Manning but what he doesn’t have is the top talent Manning has had around him most of his career or playing in a dome all his career so he takes the spot).
#8 Green (He has had one of the best offensive cast around him but never had a top WR target though he has had a top TE target but it helps more for first downs then for deep bombs also I this he simply passes it deep better… just my opinion).
#9 P. Manning (Some people will be having a heart attack with me putting him this low but look at the facts… he finished 7th on the list with the ideal players and homefeild so what is his excuse? Still he is an amazing QB who is lethal within 0-35 yards… and that does show or at least that is my opinion).
#10 Collins (He is said to be one of the best deep passes in the game but it turns out he is a bit over hyped in that aspect… still he does his job well and now with Moss getting healthy for the 2006 campaign I think it is safe to say he could make a few highlight reels cause he has never had anything like a healthy Randy Moss).
#11 Leftwich (surprisingly good… He will miss Jimmy Smith who helped him become the deep passer he is and his long ball will suffer for it but I have seen he has enough talent to still complete a few no matter who he is throwing it to).
#12 Brees (I put him below Leftwich cause he has more talent around him then Leftwich… Brees is often unfairly made fun of for having a “noodle” arm but I feel being 12th is pretty good also he still has time to improve that part of his game).
#13 Delhomme (I like both Delhomme and Hasselbeck for this spot and I like them both as QBs but I will give Delhomme the spot here because he plays the NFC South Division which has had tougher defenses then the NFC West division recently).
#14 Hasselbeck (I took into consider he had a worse WR core when I made this choice and the thing the other thing that made me slide Hasselbeck down is he has had Alexander to keep the Defenses honest while Delhomme’s running game he been spuratic in his career… I consider it splitting hairs but I will not puss out and call it a tie).
#15 Bulger (You have Holt, you have a dome you have an easy defensive division… I would have to call myself out if I put him about either Hasselbeck or Delhomme… also he may be below this mark but I think 15 is enough).

Yes i already posted this but i don't want it to dissapear... it is my favorite post.

I like your order of deep passers, but I would put Palmer above Brady, and Culpepper in the top 5 seeing as he is the only QB with double digit completions (thanks greatly to Randy Moss).

well if you wanna say Palmer is better then Brady then feel free to take that very reasonable stance... you could pick either of them for the #1 spot but i just happened to side with Brady.

Also if you wanna put Culpeper in the top 5 that again is reasonable at this point.

This is not an end all be all list of corse but it does give people a better idea of where everyone stands.

I was playing Madden yesterday, and I wound up throwing some good deep balls with Matt Hasselbeck to Bobby Engram (and I'm not even much of a Matt Hasselbeck fan).  I was only playing against the Rams though.

LOL!!!!
