Chargers | Schottenheimer apologizes for remarks
Thu, 10 Aug 2006 21:28:57 -0700

The Associated Press reports San Diego Chargers head coach Marty Schottenheimer apologized Thursday, Aug. 10, for saying Chargers starting QB Philip Rivers will be tested "when the bullets start flying." "I've often said if you stand in front of a microphone as many times as I do, you are invariably going to make a mistake and I made a mistake," he said. "But the good thing about it is I will never forget that mistake." Earlier a retired Marine colonel had criticized Schottenheimer's remarks in a letter to The San Diego Union-Tribune. "Football is not combat, it is a game," he wrote.

maybe the Marine colonel shouldn't watch sports since he's so easily offended.

I don't think he should venture away from his own home if he's that easily offended.

If Shottenheimer can't stand the heat, he should get out of the kitchen.

Oh sh1t, is that offensive to chefs and dishwashers who work in or around kitchens?

OK....let's try it again.

Football IS like war......from a strategic and tactical perspective.

Nobody is saying that football is REAL war.

The term "when the bullets fly" has been used in MANY contexts over MANY years including business.

It is NOT intended to diminish the sacrifice and service of our servicemen in any way.

I have enormous respect for our servicemen and I thank you for your service to our country.

Please do not take military analogies used to describe sports as somehow diminishing your gallant service to our country.

huh? Martyball wasn't the one complaining.

He did the standup thing, and apologized for any insensitivity he may have displayed, because someone else with thin skin "couldn't stand the heat".

As Backinthesaddle points out, Marty's only crime was using a very common metaphor.
