Although neither one of these teams are world beaters, I will say that both teams played extremely hard and have the looks of competitive football teams.
Alex Smith looked 100 times better than last year. He is starting to get patient in the pocket and showed great touch. Missed on a few passes but overall played great in the face of pressure and never quit. This guy may end up being an elite QB.
Frank Gore looked even better. He did have an early fumble that cost the 49ers points but other than than he looks explosive. He was cutting great and looked great in the passing game.
Then fumbles by Gore and Davis in the first quarter cost San Fran this game. Both deep in their own territory spotted Arz 14 points and the early lead.
I have to admire the way Fitzgerald fights for every inch he can get. Thats rare in this day of WR's.
Arizona's o line will catch up to them when they start playing the better teams and Warner is pressured.
The amount of personal fouls every every kind were out of control in this game. Hoculi must feel like the league is pressuring the refs to continue to throw these flags. They certainly played in the outcome of the game.
I think Seattle may have their hands full this year. Not saying they will lose the division, but going 13-3 is a lot easier when you have 4-6 non-competitive games. Look for both of these teams to push Seattle to the brink in their individual matchups.
Although it was kind of sloppy with a lot of turnovers and penalties, both teams were flying around and playing hard football. How the season unfolds for them will be interesting.
I wonder if they both looked good because they were both playing sucky teams?
I want to see either play a contender before I say either is worth a damn. Both of them have been "cover your eyes awful" in recent years, and I don't know that either one did enough to improve in the short term.
PS- Edge was SUCH a stupid signing for the Cards. They will live to regret that decision.
Why is edge a horrible signing? Name an offensive lineman for indy the last four years? they got noone amazing ever, it was edge. Having someone that can run the ball is crucial, who hav they had recently at all? JJ arington? Emmit smith the old version? A new RB is vital.
Granted both teams maybe played a little poorly on Defense, but i think both are ok.
Have to agree with P.T.S on edge, The Redbirds got a 1500 yard back who wants to prove just how good he is by turning their running game into something defenses have to respect. What could possibly be wrong with a team signing a proven veteran who WANTS to play for them?

Yeah Ninja, that edge statement in and of itself was pretty dumb. How can you knock a consistent, pass catching running back, added to a system that is being built in a similar fashion to that of the Superbowl winning Rams? Sure, he's no Marshall Faulk in his prime, but he sure is the best you've got for that style of offense wouldn''t you say.
Aside from what appears to be a fluke injury early in his career, he has remained virtually injury free.
You are going to have to elaborate upon your statement so as not to look like a fukn dunce. you can't just spout something off like that and not back it up with your summation of how you came to make such a bold statement.
Arizona is so similar in many ways to the Rams that it is just plain scary...They may even have a better rcving corp as a whole.....
arizona's receiver's "may" be better than the rams? they're definitely better than this year's model: holt and a MUCH SLOWER Isaac Bruce. they may be the best in the nfl. but maybe you complimenting them by saying they "may" be better than the "greatest show on turf" era rams?
ninja, i'm guessing that you think the signing of the edge was stupid because:
-they put a drain on their cap for an aging back when they really should be developing the trenches on both sides of the ball.
-the move wasn't a football decision, but made in order to put a$$es in the seats in the new stadium.
-it renders their pick of arrington a total waste and stunts his growth.
maybe i'm wrong. what IS your opinion?
despite the things i've said above, i like the signing overall. they needed help at that position. the edge is a horse, and behind that line, they need a guy who won't shy from getting the tough yards. he is also one of the best at picking up blitzes, a quality that most of us don't value, but is imporant enough to coaches to determine whether or not guys get on the field.
well, beef, that's ONE way to pad your post tally.
actually...that game was FAR from a yawner, and those teams are both far from being yawners, too. lookin' like they're on the rise. they've got alot of fun players, too.
the whole NFC west looks decent offensively, defensively not so much.
Well, Seattle has a pretty damn good defense, wouldn't you say???
I dont know, The did corral 'zona, and they did hold the lions to 6, so they might be, but I am not completely sold on them. Time will tell i guess. They got the Giants then Chicago then St Lou. If they dominate them like they have been, Then you will be right. In the mean time, ill withhold my judgement. Besides, the rams did great against the broncs, then let San Fran score 20. Its a little early to say lots of things for sure, besides the fact of course, that the Texans will regret taking bush.
