Michael Irvin and Alvin Harper were products of each other. Neither one of them was much of anything without the other one. As to the best, i posted on another thread that Rice is one of the two athletes in history (gretzky)that is the best and the record books back him up. Rice has a legitimate claim to being the best "football player" ever.

A little easier I suppose than the last few!
1. Jerry Rice - hands down
2. Steve Largent - He's a personal favorite. Always the tough catch when it mattered most.
3. Marvin Harrison - He's the only guy poised to make a stab at Rice. Clutch guy and class act.
There is no question Jerry Rice is the best receiver of all time, probably the best all around player in league history. And he's a nice guy to boot. He's pretty much seen it all, done it all, won it all. The complete player.
Chris Carter? The day he gets in the HOF (which hopefully is never) will be a day I want to forget. The OBVIOUS push offs (in other words, cheating), the CONSTANT whining to the refs, the fact that he was one of the biggest jerks in league history (and still is) and the fact that he was a Viking all just make me want to punch him hard. Sure, he racked up what, 13500+ yds., but I bet 10,000 of those yards came when he pushed off a DB to make the catch. Randy Moss's mentor......
If Chris Carter gets mentioned, the WHERE THE HE11 IS JAMES LOFTON!!! The first player to score a TD in 3 DIFFERENT DECADES!! All-Pro: 1980, 1981, 1983, 1984. 8 Pro Bowls: 1979, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1985, 1986, 1992. 1978 NFC Offensive Rookie of the Year and was on the 1980s All-Decade Team. 233 games, 764 rec., 14004 yds., 18.3 avg., 75 TDs. When he retired (1993), he was in the record book for:
[1st] Most Receiving Yards Gained, Career - 14,004 [Tied for 2nd] Most Seasons, 50 or More Pass Receptions - 9 (1979-1981, 1983-1986, 1991-1992) [3rd] Most Pass Receptions, Career - 764 [3rd] Most Season, 1,000 or More Yards, Receiving - 6 (1980-1981, 1983-1985, 1991) [3rd] Most Games, 100 or More Yards Receiving, Career - 43
No one in the HOF has better stats than Lofton, and the only guy with better stats thant Lofton is Rice. If Rice is #1, Lofton is #2.
