I know I am a Chiefs fan, but this is completely inexcusable. I don't care if it was blatent or not. I hope the NFL starts penalizing these guys a little better or else the KC Chiefs will be playing without their heads next year....literally (i.e. Trent Green, LJ). Excuse me now, I think I'm going to go hurl.
The only thing that could top the McGahee incident (as far as puke factor) is if Larry's head was actually ripped off. And I am told that I am over reacting about this facemask on LJ because I guess it looked totally unintentional at full speed. It just that I am a fireman and when I see someone's head pulled around like the chick from the exorcist, I know what that could mean for a career/or life for that matter.
thats a pretty nice one as far as facemasks go...but you boys are forgetting your history, that used to be legal, along with clothelines...spearing...crack back blocks...you really want to feel it...let them go back to the leather helmets with no facemask! It used to be a mans game ...now they put the QB in a little pink dress.

But its different for Haynesworth , right? - whatever...did you all forget about Theisman- still get chills thinking about it , none of these has anything on a phkn leg break between the knee and ankle. LT said he heard it break. WOW.
Dude...are you stupid?...Haynesworth did the EXACT same thing....the guy didn't take his damn helmet off , so how did his dome become uncovered?.....BECAUSE HAYNSETURD RIPPED IT OFF!!!
at least there was some semblance of a football play here....play is still active, guy IS trying to tackle him (the objective) and he took him down illegally, the difference you ask?
after grabbing his facemask, he didn't continue to pull until it popped off, then proceed to stomp L.J. on the head with his cleats!
The Taylor hit was legal, and funnier everytime I have to listen to Joe call a game.
IOWA, no not stooped. You , believe it or not , can be wrong. Its the point, every one here gets all high and mighty about some things and then , albeit a little difference, when the wind is blowing another way...they/you set sail. Whats good for the goose is also good for the gander.
I am glad that Rolle recieved a heafty fine on this penalty. Even though profootballtalk.com reported that it was poor running skills by LJ was partially the fault of this penalty, that doesn't matter in my opinion. Even though I'd rather see Larry carrying the football in his left arm for possible fumble reasons, that still doesn't mean that he was at a good angle to stiff arm Rolle. Like I said before, it didn't look blatent, but it was brutal. Even though these kinds of things were legal way back when, those players were not playing in todays NFL which is by far the most popular sport in the USA now, not then. They are paid millions and are some of the best atheletes around (that doesn't mean they are the best people). If this ended up being a career ending or worst yet, life threatening injury, the fact of the matter that LJ didn't offer a stiff arm or run with the ball in the correct arm wouldn't have even been brought up.
No I agree that Rolle needed a hefty fine...no doubt an illegal play, my point is how much worse had it been if he'd a kept pulling it untill it popped off and then trounce on his head a couple of times? Because I don't think Haynseworth undid the strap and gently removed his helmet....then stomped him
I was not trying to minimize the facemask to LJ....like a said a pretty nice one, not near the puking stage (the cartoon was though!) but a pretty stout one. I was just pointing out that it used to be legal, think of what some of those looked like? It was a good call, and a legit fine, just pointing out that in the old days (pre QB in pink tutu time) that this was common place.
A reader who viewed the video of Antrel Rolle's "grabbed and pulled and hurt my neck in 2006" routine on Larry Johnson has raised an excellent point with us.
The head-twisting injury that Johnson suffered when Rolle dragged him down from behind by the facemask on his helmet was, indirectly, Johnson's own fault.
How dare we say that? Well, it all comes down to fundamentals. Or, as the case may be, a lack of fundamentals at the highest level of the sport.
The most important function of anyone who carries the ball is to protect it from being taken away by the other team. For a running back who has the ball near a sideline, it's common knowledge that the guy should switch the ball to his outside arm. If he does, and if the ball is then punched out, it's more likely to end up out of bounds before it can be recovered by the other team.
Last week, for example, Eagles running back Brian Westbrook fumbled during the first drive of Philly's game against the Cowboys. He caught the ball near the middle of the field and tucked it into his left arm as he moved for the right sideline. So when the ball came out, it went back toward the middle of the field and was easily recovered by Dallas.
In Johnson's case, he released late from the backfield, caught a screen pass, and sprinted (with an awkward knock-kneed gait) down the left sideline. The ball was in his right arm the entire time.
So when Rolle approached as Johnson began to run out of steam, Johnson didn't have a free inside arm that he could use to try to fight him off.
It's just another reason why guys have got to switch the ball to the outside arm. For plenty of players, it's second nature. For others, it almost never happens. And of all the things that a football player does on the field, we can't think of anything easier to learn.
hmm...must Be a slow day for NFL gossip...but good to know that you actually think that would've stopped Rolle from grabbing his Facemask...Can anyone guess who never played Football??
