Though not a Jacksonville fan (I hate them) I am curious to know if David Garrard has the right stuff to lead this Jacksonville tem to be perennial playoffers. Byron Leftwhich, though a black Drew Bledsoe, has a stronger arm and reads defenses much better. Also, are Freddy Taylor's days numbers with the emergence of Maurice Jones-Drew?
Lemme suggest that Jacksonville's situation with David Garrard very much mirrors KC's situation with Damon Huard. Ask me, I would say you would have to go with the QB who gives you your best chance to win. Right now, the Jags are winning with Garrard, and the Chiefs are winning with Huard, so I would say you stick with them. Change the QB now, and you might take the winning edge away from these teams.
As far as the situation regarding Fred Taylor and Maurice Jones-Drew is concerned, lemme admit that these backs offer this team with a good 1-2 punch! I certainly wouldn't say Taylor's days are numbered as of yet, we all kind of forget how fast this guy is in the open field. But it is CERTAINLY advantageous when a team has 2 good backs as opposed to just 1. I say use the backs interchangeably.
Is Garrard good enought to be a long term answer? I personally think so. Do I think he WILL be the long term answer? No. As helpful as Garrard is, they JUST spent a 1st rounder on Leftwich like 3-4 years ago. Once they are confident Lefty is 100% (or has gotten the message), he will be stuck back in, and life will return to normal.
As for Huard, he is in the same situation as Garrard, the only difference is, Trent Green IS on his way out, and Huard could potentially be part of the future. Huard has made the most of his opportunity, which bodes very well for him when the time comes. Unless one of the top QBs in the draft falls to them to a point where they can't pass them up, Huard will be the QB for the rest of this year, and next in my opinion.
Huard the star of the future? Larry Johnson makes that whole team run. when they dont give him the ball they lose. Check the stats on that one, but i have been watching them all year, ,and its the way it works. Also, Damon huard is 30 or 31 years old. He is a game managing quarterback operating in an open system thanks to the best (or second best,, if you like tomlinson more) running back in the NFL. Should they let him keep the job? i dont know, trent green is better in my opinion, but huard could start there for a couple years, i would never give him a contract for more than a year or two though.
As for Garrard, I dont know, i am not a big fan of running quarterbacks. They are just inconsistent. but leftwich is too, so who knows. I think that they should trade leftwich if they go with garrard. Overall, i think that he could replace him, because they do the same exact thing, one passes one runs, but they both are too inconsitent to be the QB of the future.
I guess I should look on the bright side. I will never hear the chant "PUT IN JERRAWWWWWWWD!" at Alltell Stadium ever again......or at least i shouldn't......
The problem with Leftwich is that he is just too injury prone....he always seems to get injured right when he is hitting his stride too....it's a shame.
